LAST BUS: After many great reactions to the creative look of Last Bus I decided to do the Color Grading Breakdown (Adeep Oberoi).
The color grading of LAST BUS directed by Stephan Brenninkmeijer and written by Stuart White was a great challenge. Stephan had very clear ideas of what type of color look he wanted. The most important part of my job as a colorist is interpreting just what the client is asking for and designing the creative look to his full satisfaction. While maintaining the balance with technical quality and creativity.
Plot and Cast
Plot: A group of random foreigners are taken to a remote location during a military coup in a South American country. Facing imminent death by execution, they have to confront their inner demons.
CAST: Nadine Kamer, Michiel Zeegers, Nienke Brinkhuis, Joep Sertons, Heidi Groen and Jaap Postma.
The story is set in the nineteen seventies in a middle American country. Mr. Brenninkmeijer wanted that seventies South of the border look. A warm look with high contrast and a somewhat teal and orange feel. I did not get any reference pics but the message of Stephan was very clear to me.
The Color Grading Breakdown
Personally I do not like to re-create other looks, I rather get inspired by research and build my own creative look. So to get inspired I watched some seventies movies filmed on Kodak. Finally I created the Color Look. In this blog I created several pics of the Color Grading Breakdown in order to see the development from Raw to the Final Look. I included the raw images upon request.
Below we see the BLUE SEATS: mapping the blues to a more teal like hue with a deep color contrast.
As a freelance colorist using the latest version of Davinci Resolve, I color grade films, TV series, music videos, and advertising spots. The color correction hardware I use is the Tangent Element panel.
